Our History

The Berea Citizen has been serving the community for more than a century, after being established in 1899 by Berea College. The college released the newspaper to public ownership in 1985.

The Citizen went through numerous changes in ownership throughout the 1990s until it was purchased by Manchester-based Nolan Group Media in 1997. The group also owns community newspapers in Barbourville, Booneville, Beattyville, Manchester, McKee, Pineville and Jackson as well as a radio station and a printing plant, JFrank Publishing in London Kentucky.

The Berea Citizen is an award-winning member of the Kentucky Press Association. The staff continues to receive numerous awards for news coverage, writing, photography, design, advertising and community service.
